Last Chance
Chapter One
Sidney suddenly sat up in bed dripping from the fear that always seemed to paralyze her. Trying to calm herself down, she closed her eyes and repeated the same three words to herself as she had done so many times before, it’s not real. Opening her eyes slowly, she looked around only to realize she wasn’t in her own bed. As her heart began racing, she looked around to see if she could recognize where she was, and that’s when the real nightmare began.
The alarm went off waking Sidney from the same dream that had been haunting her ever since she was a young child. Sidney walked over and drew open the blinds to get a glimpse of what her day was going to start off as. Of course, it was rainy; as it had been for the last three days. The weather in Last Chance, Colorado was about as unpredictable as guessing the numbers to be picked in a lottery. She quietly got into the shower, and as the hot water warmed her body, she began thinking about her past. As the memories began to play in her mind, a smile began to form.
Life used to be filled with the sounds of laughter of her children playing outside and her husband writing his next best seller at home in his office. At one time Sidney lived in Denver, Colorado with her husband and two small children. Her life was the epitome of the American dream. She lived in a huge brick house at the end of a cul-de-sac; where she played an active role in their community. Sidney had grown up in a small town in Kansas, but once she graduated from high school, she shook the dust from her shoes and left for life in a bigger city.
During her years at the University of Denver, she met and fell in love with Blake. He was her dream come true. Blake was well over six feet tall and towered over Sidney’s small petite frame. The two fell in love instantly, and had vowed once they had both completed their studies, would be married. True to their commitment, Sidney and Blake were married the following spring. Life fell quickly into a routine and within a year, Sidney was pregnant with their first child. The child was a son, whom they named Douglas after Blake’s father. Within another year, Sidney was pregnant again, this time the couple was blessed with a daughter, which Sidney decided to name Madeline. The young couple had decided they were only going to have two children, so now their life was complete and they were ready to begin their lives.
Suddenly the doorbell rang, which startled Sidney back into reality. Quickly throwing a towel around her wet body, she ran to see who could be bothering her at this time of morning. Looking through the peep hole, Sidney saw that it was her boss from the café where she had been only working for a couple of months.
“Mr. Powell, what’s wrong?’ Sidney asked.
“I need you to come into work today.” He said, pausing only a second before jumping in, “I know it’s suppose to be your day off, but Linda is sick so we are gonna need you to fill in for her today.”
“Why didn’t you just call me? You didn’t need to drive over here.” Sidney said, as she began to get an eerie feeling. Knowing that she needed to get him out, she quickly thanked him and tried to shut the door.
“Wait, you aren’t going to make me leave without having some coffee, are?” Mr. Powell stated, as he pushed his way inside the small hotel room that had become Sidney’s temporary home. Mr. Powell was in his mid fifties, balding and somewhat gave off a sleazy vibe.
“Really, Mr. Powell. I need to get dried off and get ready for work. We can have some coffee at the restaurant.” Sidney’s voice squeaked.
The man reached over and gently brushed some of the water off of Sidney’s shoulder, and as he did this, she shivered in fear. Mr. Powell pulled Sidney into his arms and said, “Come on. I want to have some fun. You know you want me.” His breath became slow and labored, as his heart began to beat quicker. He slowly began kissing her neck.
In order to block what was happening; Sidney felt herself slipping into an unconscious world; a place where she would be safe from harm. She found herself walking in a field of flowers, with huge mountains in every direction. The day was so beautiful. There was a slight breeze in the air, with a faint smell of jasmine. She absolutely loved that smell. As she continued walking, she came upon her house. It was a quaint little bed and breakfast. The house was built in the late 1800’s and still looked just as gorgeous now as it had when it was first built. Sidney walked inside, and sat down on an old white wicker settee that she had found and restored it to its original state. Sidney sat there with her eyes closed and listened to the creatures outside.
Jolting her out of her beautiful fantasy, “Hey, you better get yourself dressed. See you at the café in about twenty minutes, and remember this didn’t happen. Do you understand me?” Mr. Powell mumbled angrily.
Sidney could only nod her head. She lay on her bed for a couple of minutes trying to come to terms with what had just happened to her. She closed her eyes and tried to imagine if there would ever be a place like she had envisioned. Finally deciding that she had better get herself to work, she jumped up and put on her waitress uniform.
Walking into the café, the usual crowd was already inside having their breakfast. Sidney smiled as she walked past them, trying to shake what had just happened to her only a few moments ago.
